Balanced Metrics and String Theory

We discuss recent work on finding numerical approximations to the Ricci flat metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds, using the theory of balanced metrics developed by Tian, Yau, Donaldson and others. We explain how these can be used to compute observables in string compactification. Finally, we describe a conjectured physical interpretation of the balanced metric as the probe metric in a black hole background.
